CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
Bond was set at $150,000 Sunday for a 17-year-old boy charged with aggravated assault after being shot by Chicago Police officers Saturday night in the Englewood neighborhood on the Southwest Side.
Ural J. Durant of the 7600 block of South Hamilton Avenue was charged as an adult with aggravated assault to a peace officer with a firearm, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful use of a weapon, all felonies, according to a statement from police.
Bond was set at $150,000 during a hearing Sunday, according to the Cook County Sheriff's office. His next court appearance will be Sept. 21.
Durant was also charged with a misdemeanor count of possessing a firearm without a valid FOID card and received a municipal violation for unlawful use of a handgun, according to police.
The shooting happened about 9:10 p.m. Saturday in the 7700 block of South Wolcott Avenue, according to the statement.
SEE: Teen shot in the buttocks by police after chase
Officers from the Area South Gang Enforcement Team responded to a man with a gun call and saw a male who fit the description, the statement said. Officers approached, announced they were police and the male took off running.
The officers chased until he turned and pointed a handgun at them, prompting one of the officers to shoot him, according to the statement. No officers were injured and a weapon was recovered.
Paramedics took the teen in "stable" condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, said Fire Media Affairs Cmdr. Sean Flynn.
The boy suffered a gunshot wound to the buttocks, said Larry Merritt, a spokesman for the Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates police-involved shootings.
Pat Camden, a spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police, said someone called 911 to report a person with gun near 77th and Wolcott, where people had gathered at a makeshift memorial for someone killed at that location.
The caller gave a clear description of the person who allegedly had a gun, so officers easily spotted him when they arrived, Camden said. The officers told the person to come over, but he instead began running away.
He allegedly took out and pointed a .380 semi-automatic handgun at the officers, Camden said, and an officer fired shots because he feared for his life.
