Ecorse BP station sets price at $4.49, accused of gas gouging

ECORSE, Mich. (MyFox Detroit) -

Gas prices are expensive. But one downriver station is accused of raising prices beyond the norm.

FOX 2 viewers called in Sunday to say the BP station in the 3800 block of W. Jefferson Ave. in Ecorse was selling petro for a whopping $4.49 a gallon. The price seemed high considering the state's average price per gallon this week is $4.03.

"I thought it was a mistake," said Patsy Witkowski, who pulled away after seeing the inflated price.

Station officials claims the price was set so high because they're running low on gas.

Either way, gas gouging is illegal in Michigan. The Consumer Protection Act prohibits retailers from charging a price that is grossly in excess of the price at which similar property or services are sold.

To report gas gouging, call the Attorney General's office at 1-877-765-8388 or visit www.michigan.gov/ag.
