Candidate Bio: Joe Walsh - 8th District

Posted: Updated:

Joe Walsh is the U.S. Representative for Illinois' 8th congressional district, serving since January 2011. He is a Tea Party Conservative and a member of the Republican Party.

Rep. Walsh is an advocate of limited government and a thriving private sector. He has been a harsh critic of President Barack Obama since he took office. Walsh said he wishes to continue being a spirited voice for his constituents, in order to provide a more stable economic environment for the future.

He is running against Democrat Tammy Duckworth in the 2012 election, to retain his seat in Congress.

They recently took part in a debate exclusively on FOX Chicago News, where they explained their positions on issues like immigration, health care and education, and responded to aspects of those issues that most directly affect their constituents.

On The Issues

Economy and Jobs - Every person who wants to work deserves the opportunity to work. They deserve a good, honest wage for the work that they do. For the small businesses that provide many of these jobs, we need to ensure that they are given an even playing field and not being unnecessarily burdened by red tape or other bureaucratic restrictions. Education - There are many who believe that the federal government should be more involved in determining what happens in our nation's schools. I disagree. While the federal government can certainly play a role in funding educational opportunities for students and determining national priorities, it shouldn't be involved in determining a day-to-day classroom curriculum or where a local community spends it educational dollars. Energy and the Environment -As your Congressman, I am determined to do everything in my power to ensure Congress passes a comprehensive, common sense energy plan that will ease prices at the pump. I will work for a bill that will increase the supply of American-made energy, improve conservation and efficiency, and promote new and expanding energy technologies to address America's increasingly costly and dangerous dependence on foreign sources of energy. Health Care - Last year, ObamaCare was forced down the American people's throat and they sent me to Washington to repeal it. I continue to believe that it is a poor bill based on partisan politics rather than an earnest effort to reform our health care system. Read more...

National Defense and Iraq - Reckless spending has driven the United States into trillion dollar deficits. In 2008, the national debt was $10.6 trillion, now it is $14.1 trillion. That is a $3.5 trillion increase in just two short years. This sort of reckless spending is simply not sustainable, and it would be irresponsible to exempt Defense from spending cuts. There are inefficiencies in the Department of Defense that can be improved. Read more...

Homeland Security - As a member of the Homeland Security Committee I am responsible for helping to protect our nation and American families from both domestic and international terrorism. I also serve as Vice Chairman of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Transportation Security. Read more...

Veterans - Our veterans have sacrificed so much for us and this great republic of ours. We need to make sure that they have every possible opportunity for education, work, and healthcare when they return home. Read more...

Tax Reform - I am a firm believer that American families can spend their hard-earned money more efficiently than the federal government. I believe that the first step in stimulating our economy is to implement legislation to provide tax relief for small businesses and middle-class families. I believe that we need to drastically decrease federal spending, instead of increasing it and burdening Illinois families with a higher price tag. Congress should be working to permanently put an end to the Death Tax and the Marriage Penalty, two tax policies that punish people solely for making natural progressions in life. Read more...
