3 arrested in drag racing sting, 30 cars confiscated

DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

On the weekends, thrill seekers and spectators often invade a residential neighborhood to participate in drag racing in Detroit. Early Saturday, law enforcement officers crashed their party.

On YouTube, it's easy to find video of people bragging about their latest street race in the D. There's big money involved in some of these races and big problems.

"You name it, they are doing it out here," says neighbor James Wingo. "They're selling drugs, they're selling beer and wine. They are turning this into a carnival."

The thrill seekers have set up shop right in front of Wingo's house on Epworth street near Linsdale. In the summertime, when the sun goes down -- trouble moves in

"We're going to send a very clear message that if you drag race in Wayne County, in the city Detroit, that you will lose your car," said Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon. "Not only that, if you're a spectator, watching the drag races you will lose your car."

Saturday, the sheriff's department confiscated 30 cars, a firearm, illegal narcotics and cash. Three people were arrested, two adults and a teenager. The cars and motorcycles confiscated be auctioned off or used as undercover vehicles.
