The Talker: Strike etiquette

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

What's the right way to act when you're on strike? Is there a right way to act?

The man teachers are negotiating against, the president of the Chicago School Board, accused the union this week of telling its striking teachers to party and have fun at rallies.

There's evidence teachers took such advice, as these rallies are filled with smiles, music and dancing. If someone didn't know better, they might seem like college football tailgate parades.

The teachers are also showing a sharp sense of humor and personal attacks on the mayor are standard out on the streets. The number one song among union members is "Hey hey ho ho, Rahm Emanuel has got to go."

The downtown march today also involved rerouting traffic when teachers took over the northbound lanes of Michigan Avenue.

If commuters were bothered, the police were not. They say they knew about the march in advance and did traffic control to avoid problems. The spokesperson we talked with did not know if teachers had a permit or not.

But, the school board president has been bothered by the teachers' vibe.

"This is not the behavior of a group of people that are serious about the interest of our children," said CPS' David Vitale.

"I do think our members are very concerned about what's going on but they also want to express their frustrations," replied CTU President Karen Lewis.
