CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Police said they have located a car that they believed hit an officer early Thursday in the South Side Chatham neighborhood.

About 12:30 a.m., the Gresham District officer was standing outside his squad car and interviewing someone as part of an investigation, authorities said.

A vehicle, believed to be a green Cadillac, hit the officer and then sped off, according to police and unconfirmed dispatch reports.

Paramedics took the officer in "stable" condition to an area hospital, police news Affairs Officer Amina Greer said, adding that his injuries were not life-threatening.

Unconfirmed dispatch reports indicate he was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Police found a car matching the description of the one that hit the officer near the intersection of 79th Street and Prairie Avenue, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.

No one was inside the car when police found it and the suspect is still at large, Mirabelli said.

The Chicago Police Department's Major Accidents Investigation Unit is collecting details.
