CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A southwest suburban woman accused of attempting to smuggle marijuana into the Cook County Jail for her boyfriend has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor and was sentenced to probation.
Kira Lundgren of Plainfield pleaded guilty Friday to a misdemeanor charge of bringing contraband into a penal institution and was sentenced to 24 months probation, Cook County State's Attorney's office spokeswoman Lisa Gordon said.
Lundgren was arrested June 11, 2011, for delivering a package containing cannabis for Heriberto Viramontes, a man accused of severely beating an Irish exchange student with a bat during a 2010 robbery in Bucktown. Lundgren was 22 years old when she was arrested.
The marijuana was allegedly found in Viramontes' cell in Division 10 of the Cook County Jail.
Also charged was Jerome Prusa of Westchester, a correctional officer who allegedly allowed the transfer of the cannabis, according to the Cook County Sheriff's office. Prusa pleaded guilty in November 2011 to one count of misdemeanor official misconduct and was sentenced to 10 days community service, a $500 fine and random drug tests. He also resigned as an auxiliary officer with the LaGrange Park police.
Viramontes, 32, is being held without bond on attempted murder, aggravated battery and armed robbery charges for the April 23, 2010, Bucktown attacks on Natasha McShane and Stacy Jurich. Viramontes' former girlfriend Marcy Cruz, 26, was also charged.
Jurich, of Chicago, was hurt in the brutal assault, but the 4-foot-9, 100-pound McShane was most severely injured, suffering a cracked skull. Doctors in Chicago had to remove a portion of her skull because of brain swelling.
