A warning tonight from police in the Lakeview neighborhood: keep your doors and windows locked at night because burglars could be targeting your home.
They all appear to be crimes of opportunities. The latest burglary happened in the 1300 block of West Barry. Police say the thief or thieves take advantage of open or unlocked windows or doors and slip inside to steal whatever they can.
"It's a little scary I guess. Obviously I want to close my windows and keep my doors locked," says concerned resident Nathan Kizior.
Kylen Cieslak, another worried resident, says, "It's kinda a shock. I think Lakeview's a pretty safe area, especially here at Southport and Lincoln area; I've lived here for a little over a year and haven't heard of too much stuff going on."
The crime spree started the weekend of August 4th and the burglaries primarily happen overnight while residents slept inside, unaware of the intruders until they woke up the next morning and discovered belongings missing.
"There's also a false sense of security sometimes when you've been living somewhere for a while and something hasn't happened to you and there's always the opportunity you forget one time or you leave the door open when you're gone for five minutes," says Emily Beatty.
The community alert did not indicate what kinds of items are being stolen. But people in this area say a similar rash of burglaries happened about a year ago. Police did make arrests in those cases. Now they are hoping to catch the quiet criminals before they strike again.
"It's scary but that's kinda part of living in Chicago you just kinda have to deal with it," says Chad Queen. "You think you live in a nice neighborhood and then a rash of this comes up but you just kind of take it and move on."
In two of the burglaries, the suspect is described as black man 18-35 and 5-foot-7, the alert said. In one robbery, the suspect was described as Hispanic man 20-25, 140-160 pounds with brown eyes, black hair and an olive complexion.
Anyone with information should contact Area North detectives at (312) 744-8263.
