Rod Blagojevich writes birthday message to fellow inmate's son

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

It's been almost six months now since Rod Blagojevich reported to prison last march, and while his wife recently disclosed one of the e-mail messages he sent her on their anniversary, nobody has seen any handwritten messages from Blagojevich --until now.

It's probably not a surprise, that the handwritten note from Rod Blagojevich that FOX Chicago has obtained offers this advice: "whatever you do, stay out of politics."

Ten years ago, a masked man with a 22-caliber revolver walked into this bank in north suburban Gurnee, and demanded some duffel bags filled with cash.

He made off with $18,000. On the way out, he remarked, "you can thank President Bush and the economy for this." Then, he made his getaway on a bicycle.

He was eventually caught, convicted, and sentenced to 11 years and two months in prison. He's serving his time at the Englewood Federal Correctional Institution outside Denver and that's where he met Blagojevich entering prison.

In late July, the convicted bank robber sent a birthday card to his oldest son. On that card,

a handwritten message, signed by Rod Blagojevich.

"Your dad is a good guy. He is manning up to the mistakes he's made. He is well liked here and has many friends. Happy birthday, good luck in school and whatever you do -- stay out of politics," signed Rod Blagojevich.

The inmate's family shared the note with FOX Chicago News, on condition we not mention any names. One of Blagojevich's attorneys, Sam Adam Jr., says he's not surprised Blagojevich added the birthday message for a fellow inmate.

"There's no doubt in my mind, that's a note from Rod. This is just another example in my opinion of the kind of man Rod is, no matter what anybody's trials and tribulations are, he wanted to let the family, let that son know that whatever his father had done, he's still a decent human being," says Adam.

Last month, we revealed that Blagojevich's appeal has been delayed in part because the court reporter responsible for producing trial transcripts took a 5 1/2 month leave of absence. Adam says Blagojevich's prison emails to Sam Adam Sr. repeatedly focus on that appeal.

Adam hasn't seen Blagojevich in person since a prison visit last April, but he says the ex-governor has a different look now than he did back then.

"My understanding is that he's gotten a little grayer now," says Adam. "That's when it went from black to brown, and when I saw him, it was brown. Now that he's been in there longer, it's starting to go gray."

There has been some progress on those delayed appeals transcripts. A transcript from Blagojevich's first trial is now complete. There's a deadline of September 28th for the transcript from trial number two.
