ATLANTA -
Delta SkyMiles are a little tougher to come by for some fliers these days. The airline quietly changed the rules for their frequent flier miles program on September 1. Now, discounted fares purchased through some third parties might not earn you as many miles as they used to.
It used to be that when you flew 1,000 miles, you got 1,000 SkyMiles. But that may not be the case anymore. Delta is now doing what some other airlines have already done and making some tickets less profitable in miles. The difference is between published and non-published fares.
Under the new rules, if the ticket price is not published-- and likely purchased through a third party-- you won't get as many SkyMiles if you get a fare through a consolidator, like a group student fare. You won't earn as many SkyMiles if you book your ticket as part of a cruise package, or get your flight as part of a discounted tour package.
The rules for published fares haven't changed, which means if you buy your ticket straight from Delta's website or through online travel companies like Travelocity or Orbitz, you won't be impacted.
A Delta spokesperson said it doesn't affect a lot of people, but certainly some.
