CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
Court ended late Thursday in the Drew Peterson case, so defense attorneys didn't have time to file an appeal, but they promised one is coming soon.
Steve Greenberg is part of Peterson's legal team, and spoke with FOX Chicago News the day of the verdict about the next step.
"I spoke to him in court but I haven't spoken to him since," Greenberg says in response to a question asking if he's spoken to Drew. "He's obviously disappointed. He was stoic when the verdict came down. I think more shocked than stoic. And we'll talk to him the next couple of days and figure out what we're going to do."
Greenberg says he isn't positive they'll be successful with an appeal, but they have some good issues.
"If I could be positive there wouldn't be so many lawyers," Greenberg commented. "The hearsay is a wonderful issue. There are other issues that were raised in our post-trial motion regarding some of the evidence and the lack of evidence. We can still raise that on appeal."
The next steps include lawyers putting together everything they think was wrong in the trial, in what's called a post-trial motion.
"We have to gives the trial judge the chance to correct any trial errors and then he'll sentence Drew if he feels that the process was not flawed in any way. And Then after Drew's sentence then the appeal process starts," Greenberg explains.
It can take two to three years for an appeal to play out.
In reply to the post-trial reaction around the courthouse, Greenberg says, "You know, people express their feelings in different ways. I don't think that given some of the things we've ever done, we're really in a position to be critical of anyone else. I think it's unfortunate for the children and I think something that's forgotten is that their father is locked up' whether he ultimately gets out or not is to be seen. Their mother is deceased and it's a sad day for both sides."
