CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

CAUGHT IN THE CROSSFIRE: An overnight shooting and subsequent crash on the Dan Ryan Expressway left one driver dead. Three people were in the vehicle that was fired on.

State police said the shooting happened at 11:45 p.m., as one vehicle was getting on the Dan Ryan near 87th street in the South Side Chatham neighborhood.

When shots were fired from another vehicle, the 2012 Jeep Cherokee continued to the exit ramp and crashed into several parked cars, and then it smashed into an auto parts shop on Lafayette called O'Reilley's.

Larry Porter, 25, of the 10000 block of South Parnell Avenue was dead at the scene, according to officials. Porter was driving when he was shot in the head.

Porter became a dad Wednesday.

A 34-year old man in the passenger seat suffered head injuries, and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center for treatment. Authorities were not sure whether that man's injuries were caused by the gunfire or the crash.

A 27-year old in the back seat was not hurt, and refused medical attention at the scene.

Authorities are talking to the injured men, but are asking other drivers to come forward with information.

"We need help stopping gun violence," community activist Andrew Holmes said. "The only way to stop gun violence is for people to tell what they know and what they see."

They said the injured men couldn't provide a description of the shooter or the vehicle involved.

State police are investigating the shooting while Chicago police are investigating the crash, and the ramp was open as of 5 a.m.
