CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
One more thing, about Cardinal Francis George, who began chemotherapy today.
When it was announced that his cancer had returned, some had their faith shaken. It reminded me of a conversation I had with the cardinal last year when I asked him if tragedy or sickness ever makes him question his own beliefs.
"You question the mystery of evil," the Cardinal told FOX Chicago. "How could a good God commit this kind of evil? Because, we say he does and that's a constant conundrum, sure. Especially if you're at the receiving end...either of a natural disaster like a hurricane or a tornado or a plague, a sickness or a human disaster like the holocaust. Where is God in all that? And, that's a question that will continue to be raised because we'll never know the final answer to that. What we have to say is faith is that God can create good out of evil and you do see that often enough. You see a person that's suffering, who is a marvelous witness to love. Well, something good is coming out of that suffering. Then, you can always ask, 'well, why is there suffering in the first place?' The answer to that is because God permits us to be free and if he took away our freedom, everything might work better but then we wouldn't be made in his image and likeness because he's free."
In a response to a question about the Cardinal ever getting angry at God, he replied, "You bet. "God is real. Not some cosmic love machine. So, if he's got a personality, it's like any other relationship. there are good days and bad days," Cardinal George continued.
Cardinal Francis George: a man of great faith, good humor, and the recipient of all our prayers for good health.
