High school seniors speak out about potential teacher’s strike - FOX 32 News Chicago

Rev. Jesse Jackson thinks strike unlikely: EXCLUSIVE

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

On Tuesday evening, Rev. Jesse Jackson told FOX Chicago's Political Editor Mike Flannery exclusively at the Democratic National Convention that he does not think a strike will happen.

He also said that whatever happens will have national impact.

"My impression is they may be closer on the school issue than the present rhetoric. We don't know," Jackson said." But, I hope it gets back home real soon because what happens in Chicago could affect the whole country. "

Meanwhile, the first day of school at Chicago Public Schools felt a bit different, especially for seniors.

"It's a bad time to have a strike for us seniors," says Mason Randle.

Instead of gearing up for their final year in high school, seniors are looking to a possible teacher's strike-- a first in their lifetime.

"All the classes are preparing for strikes. I have two AP classes this year and so they're like you're still going to have homework and you can't really contact the teachers," says senior Marquis Williams. "So everybody is worried about it, but everybody is optimistic that it won't happen."

While there is optimism, it leads to concern. No teachers means no college transcripts.

"If they do go on strike, that does mean a lot of our transcripts won't go out on time, but I think you just have to adjust it as it comes. I'm prepared for it. It might put a little more pressure on me," comments senior Armani Nightengale.

Chicago Public Schools is concerned enough. It submitted a request to the Illinois High School Association to allow student athletes to still participate in sports during a strike.

The IHSA tells FOX Chicago News the waiver will be reviewed on September 10th, and a decision will be made. Until then, students remain in limbo.

"Everyone in my class has mixed emotions about it," says Jeremy Acosta. "Sure it's a break it's a break for us, but when applying to college we still need the college recs and the applications sent in. And if it does happen that's all going to be put to a halt."
