Strube Celery & Vegetable: Helping fight hunger for 34 years

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

FOX Chicago News is teaming up with the Greater Chicago Food Depository to help fight hunger all year long. One local company showed its very special relationship with the Food Depository Monday morning.

Strube Celery & Vegetable is the city's largest wholesale produce company. They're also the oldest. They'll hit the century mark next year.

The Strube family also helped found the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

"My grandfather was a charter member, founding member of the Greater Chicago Food Depository," Strube Celery & Vegetable's T.J. Fleming said. "He saw a need 30 something years ago to eradicate hunger in Chicago. We had actual produce we could donate and he wanted to do that to feed hungry people in Chicago."

Today, the Strube Company is still one of the food depository's biggest donors - donating more than 10 million pounds of produce over the last decade.

"They may have a product that has five or six days shelf life left on it, but a retailer needs more time to sell it," Greater Chicago Food Depository's Gerry Maguire said. "So they will actually donate it to us and we'll get it out the same day or next day to the community and the community still obviously has a reasonable amount of shelf life to consume the product."

You'll find it all here, from A to Z - apples to zucchini. It's a proud family tradition.

Strube's has been in business since 1913, and to think it was 34 years ago when Bob Strube came up with the idea for an operation that would one day become the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

"His goal was to get rid of hunger sometime in his life," Fleming said. "He didn't get to see that happen, but I'm sure he's very proud of what he started and what the food depository has turned into. It's fantastic. It's a great legacy and I'm proud to be a part of."

We can all make a difference in the fight on hunger by donating just $1 or one food product to the Greater Chicago Food Depository.
