CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A blaze at a strip mall in the West Side Lawndale neighborhood left a man critically injured Saturday evening, according to a spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department.
The man was rehabbing a storefront in the 1800 block of South Kostner Avenue when the fire erupted, Fire Media Affairs said, adding that a cutting torch was being used at the time.
Firefighters believed an explosion took place, Fire Media Affairs said, and the ensuing blaze caused the storefront to collapse.
The worker, believed to be 25 years old, suffered burns and was listed in critical condition at Mount Sinai Hospital, Fire Media Affairs said.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze about 6:30 p.m., Fire Media Affairs said, and investigators on Saturday night continued to piece together what caused the fire.
