CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Yesterday afternoon, little Mya Patel was playing with her friends on the second floor of a West Rogers Park apartment building when her family heard smoke alarms and smelled gasoline.

"I told my friend to go tell his brother. His brother was by the door calling 911 and then we ran down," Mya said.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, they not only found a fire, but the bodies of 64-year-old Gary Brown, and his roommate, 48-year-old Cathy Lee. They had been stabbed to death and wrapped in blankets, before the killer set the apartment on fire.

It's a mystery why they were targeted.

"They were very friendly people, I don't know how this could happen," commented neighbor Sanjay Patel.

Brown was a minor league pitcher in the late 60's then went to John Marshall Law School and became city attorney in Kankakee for eight years.

In 1997, Brown stopped practicing law, and for the last five years, he's worked at a Rogers Park Community Center where he taught unemployed persons how to use computers for job searches. Workers there told FOX Chicago News he was a very popular and likeable guy.

Rogers Park Community center is where he met Miss Lee, whose apartment he shared.

Brown's personal website says he also gave lessons out of his home and had a lifetime passion for photography. But neither his co-workers nor his neighbors seem to have any a clue why anyone would have wanted Brown and his roommate dead.
