The Talker: Urban Outfitters' new t-shirts glorify drinking

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
There's not much of
a difference between alternative and mainstream any more.
Entire businesses
are built on edgy these days, like new t-shirts for sale at Urban Outfitters; a
store that aims its clothes at shoppers 18 to 30 years old.
Part of their
target demographic is under the drinking age, but the shirts are all about
booze. One has an election twist that says "I vote for vodka," while
another says ""misery loves alcohol," and there's even an
Olympic-themed shirt that says, "U.S.A. drinking team."
The store on South State St. in Chicago has a window
display that says "let freedom drink."
The group Mothers Against
Drunk Driving is upset that the pro-alcohol message is being aimed at teenagers
who aren't even legally allowed to be drinking.
Being provocative
is the store's goal and the website of its parent company says its products are
meant to be "compelling and distinct," and are aimed at creating an
"empathetic connection" with customers.
