Child pageant star Honey Boo Boo, airline dress codes: Chat Room

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

On this week's Chat Room, Chicago Sun-Times editor Susanna Negovan and consultant Rochelle Trotter discuss child beauty pageants and airline dress codes.

First up, the ladies chat about child beauty pageants. Ratings for these shows have skyrocketed and even promoted the launch of child lingerie stores selling padded bras and padded panties! Is this beauty or child exploitation?

Rochelle thinks it is definitely child exploitation. The hottest child beauty star, Honey Boo Boo Child, is most scary. This little 6-year-old girl drinks what she calls "go go juice" and dances in bars on the counter while stating "dollars make me holla!" Her mother is clearly teaching her these things and it is very sad to think what this child will be like at age 16.

Susanna thinks that little girls like to play dress up and pageants are an example. She thinks perhaps Honey Boo Boo Child will have a better chance at a future since she is making so much money on her new reality TV show. It's clear her family doesn't have much money so this could be a way of providing college or other funds for this little girl.

Next, the ladies discussed dress codes and airline restrictions. Should airlines be able to restrict what you wear - or ban you from a flight if they don't like the way you present yourself? Recent press around passengers booted from flights for too much cleavage, t-shirts with curse words, and an anti-TSA message have sparked much viral chatter.

Susanna thinks dress on airlines should not be regulated - who determines what is acceptable or not? It's far too subjective of a topic and she doesn't understand how an airline can try to regulate someone's personal fashion sense.

Rochelle said freedom of expression is reserved for public places. If someone is in a private location they are subject to rules of that establishment - such as stores which clearly state "no shirt, no shoes, no service."
