IL Republican Congress members won’t spend much time at RNC

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The cancellations in Tampa had no impact on three embattled Illinois Republican members of Congress.

Two decided long ago to skip the convention until Wednesday night and a third isn't going at all.

At a plant in Addison today, Representative Joe Walsh was endorsed for re-election by the National Federation of Independent Businesses. Ranked by some as the most endangered congressional incumbent in the country, Walsh isn't taking any time off for the Republican National Convention.

Representative Robert Dold, another embattled suburban Republican, is going to Tampa, but for barely 24 hours.

When FOX News Chicago asked Dold about attending the convention late on Wednesday, he responded, "Correct. So, I mean we're focusing on trying to get out and talk to as many of the constituents out here. This is obviously where the voters are. We're going to spend time here."

It's the same for Congresswoman Judy Biggert of Hinsdale, who will also be in Tampa for just a few hours.

Ironically, when House Speaker John Boehner is scheduled to speak to Illinois' convention delegates Wednesday morning at their hotel, it's likely none of his most embattled incumbents will even be in the audience.

Fox Chicago News has learned that Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Illinois) considered attending this week's Republican National Convention in Florida.  A source said that, in the end, Kirk chose not to go.

The source said Kirk seriously discussed the possibility with his doctors and others.  The source did not say why Kirk ultimately rejected the idea.

Illinois's junior senator suffered a serious ischemic stroke last Jan. 21, caused by a complete blockage of his right carotid artery.  After three brain surgeries, he transferred to the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago in February.  Several videos released by Kirk's office documented his arduous regimen of physical therapy.  Kirk remains an out patient at the RIC, continuing physical therapy five days a week.
