Glendale Heights man hits roommate, kills dog

WHEATON, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A Glendale Heights man was charged with domestic battery and animal cruelty after hitting his roommate and killing his pet cockatiel, prosecutors said Monday.

David Hritz, 39, of the 1200 block of Glen Ellyn Road in Glendale Heights, was charged with two misdemeanor counts of domestic battery and one felony count of aggravated cruelty to animals, according to a release from the DuPage County State's Attorney's office.

Hirtz allegedly began fighting with his roommate, Nicole Filippis, at 10:09 p.m. Saturday and repeatedly struck her with his fists on her head and body, the release said. He allegedly threw his pet cockatiel against the wall and stabbed it to death with a knife.

"Studies have shown a correlation between animal abuse and domestic violence," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert B. Berlin said. "According to the American Humane Association, 13 percent of intentional animal abuse cases involve domestic violence. The charges in this case are particularly disturbing in that they allege the beating of a fellow human being and the intentional killing of a pet."

Bond was set Sunday at $30,000 and he is scheduled to appear Sept. 6 in front of Judge Robert Kleeman.
