CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The University of Illinois said a record number of prospective freshmen applied for admission to its three campuses in 2012.

Those campuses are in Urbana-Champaign, Chicago and Springfield.

The university said it had a total of about 10,200 spots available, but got about 48,000 applications. That's a six percent increase from last year.

The Urbana-Champaign campus received the most applications, a record at just over 31,000. Springfield also saw a new record for applications.

There were 2,900 spots available, but a near-record of nearly 15,000 applied.
