Two firefighters taken to hospitals after extra-alarm blaze

One firefighter was cut in the face, while another was taken to an area hospital for exhaustion following an extra-alarm fire on the Far Southeast Side.
The blaze started in a home near 102nd Street and Ewing Avenue at 12:04 a.m., police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said.
Crews called an extra alarm for the blaze, which spread to a one-story commercial building before it was extinguished sometime before 1:45 a.m., according to Fire Media Affairs.
No residents were hurt, but a firefighter suffered a laceration to the face and was taken on a basic life-support ambulance to St. Margaret Hospital in Hammond, Ind., Fire Media Affairs said. Another firefighter suffering from exhaustion was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center.
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
