An Aurora man already serving a 35-year term for one gang-related murder was sentenced to life in prison Friday after a second murder conviction.
Ruben Hernandez, 29, of the 300 block of Superior Street in Aurora, was convicted in May for the 2005 murder of 27-year-old Michael Moore, according to a release from the Kane County State's Attorney's office.
Hernandez was previously convicted of first-degree murder in the 2005 beating death of Jorge Caro, 21, in Aurora, according to the release. He was sentenced to 35 years, which he was currently serving.
Just two months after Caro's death in 2005, Hernandez was riding in a van with other gang members in Aurora hunting for street gang rivals to kill, the release said. Near the intersection of Smith Street and East Galena Boulevard in the western suburb the group spotted a white sedan with two men inside, according to the release.
The driver of the van pulled up next to the sedan, and Hernandez held open the side door of the van while Chavez K. Saulsberry, 22, and another person in the van fired 9mm semi-automatic handguns at the sedan, according to the release. Moore was shot and killed and another man was injured.
Saulsberry was Hernandez's co-defendant in the Moore murder, and he was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder, and one count of felony armed violence, according to the release. He was currently serving a 55-year sentence in the November 2005 gang-related murder of Montrell Fluellen, 21, of Aurora.
If convicted, Saulsberry also faces a life sentence. His next court date is scheduled on Oct. 4.
Hernandez's second sentence includes natural life for the murder, plus an additional 30 years for attempted murder and 15 years for his possession of a firearm during the shooting, the release said.
