CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A southwest suburban was shot at during a road-rage incident Thursday night in northwest Indiana.

The incident began about 9:03 p.m. when a 22-year-old Orland Park woman was driving her 2004 Honda Civic west in the left lane of I-80/94, and a man driving a dark-colored pickup began tailgating her west of Grant Street in Gary, Ind., according to a press release from Indiana State Police.

The man continued to tailgate her for about a mile before he tried to force the woman's car into the concrete median, the release said. He then drove on the left shoulder of the roadway and tried to force the Civic over to the right.

At this point he drove back over to the right side of the woman's car and began waving a silver handgun in the air. The woman heard a shot and saw a bullet hole in her passenger door, according to the release. She was not struck by the bullet but a piece of plastic from the door hit her hand.

The pickup driver then immediately cut over to the left and exited at Cline Avenue, the release said. He is described as an "older" white male with white hair, wearing a baseball cap.

It is believed he used a small-caliber handgun, and a bullet was recovered from the Civic.

The woman declined treatment on the scene for the abrasion on her hand.

Anyone with information is asked to call Indiana State Police Detective Chris Campione at (219) 696-6242.
