CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A bank branch on the Near North Side was robbed Friday morning, but police say a dye pack may have exploded in the stolen money.
About 9:55 a.m. a man passed a note announcing a robbery to a teller at the North Community Bank branch in the 800 block of North State Street, police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez said.
After getting an unknown amount of cash, the man fled on foot in an unknown direction, Perez said.
A dye pack with the cash may have exploded, covering part of his clothing with red powder, according to unconfirmed dispatch reports.
The suspect was described as black man in his mid-30s, 5-feet 11-inches tall to 6-foot-1, with a thin build, between 180 and 195 pounds, wearing a tan-colored shirt, according to the FBI dispatch reports. He did not display a weapon, according to the FBI.
There have been at least 129 bank robberies in the Chicago area this year. In 2011, there were 115, according to the FBI.
