23-year-old charged with armed robberies at Northwestern University

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A 23-year-old north suburban man suspected in the armed robbery of three Northwestern University students early Sunday has turned himself in to police.

Three female students were walking in the 2000 block of Pratt Court in Evanston when two men approached about 1:10 a.m., according to Evanston police. The men told the women to stop and one of them took out a silver handgun and snatched a student's purse.

The two other women were told to hand over their purses, and the men ran westbound on Foster Avenue, police said. The women were not injured.

About 25 minutes later, two men used a credit card taken during the robbery at a 7-Eleven store at 3441 Church St. in Skokie, Evanston police said.

Surveillance video shows two men exiting a light-colored vehicle and entering the store, Evanston police said. A man with dreadlocks or braids approaches the register and makes a purchase with the credit card, which belonged to one of the robbery victims.

Following the release of surveillance images, Timothy Blue, 23, turned himself in at the Evanston Police Department on Wednesday, police said. Blue was one of the men captured on the video surveillance images, and was later identified by witnesses in a lineup, police said.

On Thursday, Blue, of the 1800 block of Hartrey in Evanston, was charged with three counts of armed robbery, police said.

Police said the apprehension of the second suspect is pending.
