CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
BP is suspending the sale of mid-grade and premium fuel sales in the Chicago area until it can make sure the gas is safe.
The company said it has fixed the source of its bad gasoline, but isn't taking any chances.
Thousands of cars in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin have stalled out and had other problems because of contaminated fuel produced at the company's Whiting, Ind. refinery.
A company spokesman said an alkylation unit went bad at the refinery, causing the gas to turn sludge-like.
BP has received more than 10,000 complaints stemming from the gas, and said it will pay for the repairs on those cars if the drivers provide documents about where the gas was purchased and how much their repairs cost.
