CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
CAUGHT IN THE CROSSFIRE: Eight people, ranging in age from 14 to their early 20s, were wounded Thursday night in a drive-by shooting in the South Shore neighborhood, officials said.
The shooting occurred about 9:13 p.m. in the 7800 block of South Essex Avenue, and involved two factions of the Black P. Stones that haven been fighting for about a month, according to police.
Eight people - ranging in age from 14 to 28 - were wounded in the shooting, and taken to area hospitals.
Police News Affairs listed the victims' ages, injuries and hospitals as follows:
- A 28-year-old was taken in critical condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County with gunshot wounds to the chest and knee
- a 16-year-old went to Advocate Trinity Hospital with a gunshot wound to the foot, and was treated and released;
News Affairs described the other six victims as being in "stable" condition:
- A 16-year-old boy taken to Mount Sinai Hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg;
- a 20-year-old man taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County with a gunshot wound to the leg;
- a 14-year-old boy taken to Comer's Children Hospital with a gunshot wound to the arm;
- another 14-year-old boy taken to Children's Memorial Hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg;
- a 15-year-old taken to Comer's Children's Hospital with a gunshot wound to the back of the neck;
- and a 19-year-old woman taken to Stroger Hospital with a gunshot wound to the arm.
About 10:30 p.m., at least a dozen police cars left the shooting site and sped to 81st and Stony Island. Police with rifles surrounded the South Shore Motel. What they thought was the suspect's car also was found nearby, and police spotted a blood trail leading from the car to one of the rooms.
As of 1 a.m., police said the barricade situation was over after SWAT team members got into the room, but found no one inside; though they did find two guns. Motel surveillance video showed two males left just before officers arrived, police said.
Police were still unsure whether those two males were the shooters, or whether they were victims themselves.
Area South detectives are investigating.
