CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
Former Mayor Richard Daley started the conversation again about the prospect of a new stadium and second NFL team in the Chicago market. Sports fans say the topic comes up every couple of years, and while we all love the Bears, some fans say that's enough.
Former Mayor Richard Daley says it might be time to add a second.
"I really believe we could get a second football team. Why is it that New York has two, Florida has three and San Francisco has two?"
During an interview on Comcast sports, the former mayor also said that ‘if you build it, they will come.'
Daley thinks if Chicago were to build a new stadium, it could attract international attention; the kind that comes with hosting major events like the Super Bowl or the Final Four.
Some sports fans at The Scout say the odds of that happening now at one of the smallest stadiums in the league are slim to none. They also say that Chicago blew that opportunity during renovations to the stadium, where a retractable roof and more seats should have been part of the plan.
Still, there are some fans excited about rooting for two.
"I do think it's time. I'm a New Yorker and we've had two teams for a very long time and I think this city has grown substantially and I think they're ready for it," says sports fan Myles best. "I know I'd root for the second team cause I'm not a bears fan."
Bears fan Christopher Stanley thinks two teams would divide the city.
"You should have a whole city rooting for one team and the city is split when you're rooting for two teams. We've got that going with baseball---we got sox, we got cubs. Sox and cubs that's a whole other story all together."
We can all remember when football fans were able to root for the Chicago Cardinals and the Bears, which a lot of fans talked about as well.
While this is just talk for now, FOX Chicago News still called Mayor Rahm Emanuel's office tonight to see if he had anything to say. "No comment," was his response.
