A west suburban man who police say beat his wife in the head with a hammer early Wednesday, leaving her hospitalized with possibly life-threatening injuries, has been charged with attempted murder.
Camilo Rivera of the 400 block of Clark Street in Aurora was charged with attempted murder and aggravated domestic battery for allegedly attacking his wife as she lay in bed, according to a statement from Aurora police.
Rivera, 44, hit his 39-year-old wife repeatedly in the head with a hammer as she slept, causing massive head injuries, according to police. She was taken in critical condition to Provena Mercy Center Hospital in Aurora, before being airlifted to a suburban hospital.
She remained in critical condition Wednesday afternoon with possibly life-threatening injuries.
Police were called to the Rivera home at 2:07 a.m. Wednesday. Four of the couple's children, ages 15-21, were home during the attack and one of them called 911, police said.
Rivera was arrested at the home, and the hammer was recovered, police said. He is being help at the Aurora Police Dept. pending a bond hearing Thursday morning in St. Charles.
