CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
Even though it's Tuesday, at Halas it's Thursday. Which means the Bears are three days from kicking off a game and not overly talkative. Except for DJ Moore who always has something fun to say.
Tuesday it was about the fluorescent orange shoes he bought all the DB's. He said it was to help with solidarity, but stressed that DB's have a certain flavor - not every position group can pull off shoes as bright as the sun. Major Wright agreed. Probably true. I mean 'Neon Deion' had arguably the most "flavor" in the history of the position. Makes sense. But let's move on.
Business of the day was defense. And with injuries at safety continuing to be a storyline we asked Wright about his level of concern. He said the good news is that everyone knows both sides of the position and they understand they need to be ready. But they are super young. Average age of the safeties on the roster is 23 with less than two years experience. Craig Steltz is the veteran with five years of experience...next closest is Wright (3). They're all still learning and developing. Injuries no doubt going to set them back and no time table for Brandon Hardin who suffered that neck injury against the 'Skins. He had so much buzz heading into camp and while learning the position - he's been a bright spot. Hopefully he makes a quick and full recovery.
Brian Urlacher is with the team, watching from the sidelines. I asked Rod Marinelli how he's doing - one week since the scope. And he said "Smiling and doing great". Again, until he's not ready for the regular season, I refuse to be overly concerned.
Just Because: Marinelli might be the most soft spoken coach I've ever interviewed. For a defense that loves to 'bring the nasty,' I can't fathom a "nasty" version of him. Seems like the nicest person on the planet. Would love to sit in on a pre-game speech. And Lovie's shortest post practice presser ended " I'll take your questions"...silence..."one of those kind of days, huh".
