CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
CAUGHT IN THE CROSSFIRE: Detectives were questioning a suspect who allegedly opened fire on police after shooting a woman in the head Tuesday night.
Police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer said the male suspect, whose age was not immediately available, was in custody and charges were pending as of early Wednesday.
About 11 p.m., a 47-year-old woman suffered a gunshot wound to the head during a drive-by shooting in the 6700 block of South Blackstone Avenue, Greer said, citing preliminary information.
The gunman tried fleeing, Greer said, but the car he rode in crashed in the 6800 block of South Blackstone Avenue.
Police officers witnessed the shooting, Greer said, and the gunman opened fire on police after exiting the car.
Police officer exchanged gunfire with the man, who eventually ran away, Greer said, adding that no officers were reported injured.
Paramedics took the woman who was shot in the head to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition, Greer said.
Area Central detectives are investigating.
