DETROIT (WJBK) -
A mother cried out in grief Tuesday after learning her seven-and-a-half-month-old son died after a fire tore through a Detroit home on the city's east side.
16-year-old Chris Williams was inside the home along with an adult and five small kids. He tried to reach the baby, but couldn't make his way through the thick, dark smoke.
"I ran out (of) the room to see what was going on, and all I (saw) was smoke and stuff," said Williams. "I tried to run upstairs, and it was too hot. The roof was falling. And I tried to get somebody else, and three more dudes tried to run up there with me and we couldn't. (There) was too much smoke, too much heat and too much fire."
Coby Long Johnson was the youngest of the five kids inside. His two-year-old brother along with two-year-old twins and a three-year-old little girl all made it out safely.
Those four children are all right. As for how the fire started, it's still too early for police to know the cause.
We have learned there was illegal electricity running to the home. It's unknown if that had anything to do with the fire. We're told it appears it started upstairs where the baby was asleep at the time.
