CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

CAUGHT IN THE CROSSFIRE: Justice of a sort came quickly for a 19-year-old gang member Monday night. After the 19-year-old gang member shot a rival gang member in Humboldt Park, he was attacked and severely beaten.

The 23-year-old victim was standing in the 1100 block of North Keystone Avenue about 11:50 p.m. when a man exited a van and shot him, police News Affairs Amina Officer Greer said.

The shooter then fled on foot, but was caught and badly beaten by acquaintances of the victim, News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak said.

The victim was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was listed in "stable" condition with a gunshot wound to the shoulder, according to Greer.

The shooter, a 19-year-old man, was hospitalized at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, reportedly in extremely critical condition.

Both men have gang affiliations and criminal histories, police said.

The 23-year-old victim is refusing to cooperate with police and says he does not want to press charges, according to police.

Area North detectives are investigating.
