The Guardian Angels escorted women at the corner of Newport and Halsted Friday morning, after a man tried to attack a woman inside her Lakeview apartment.
Police are looking for the man who broke in and attempted to sexually assault her.
The man broke into an apartment in the 800 block of West Newport Avenue about 5 a.m. while the residents – 24 and 25-year-old women - were sleeping, according to a community alert from Area North detectives.
The man attempted to sexually assault the 25-year-old, but the disturbance woke up her roommate and the man fled with miscellaneous property stolen from the residence, police said.
Neighbors said they are on alert.
Police said residents should always be cautious, to make sure doors and windows are locked, and call police if they see any suspicious people or vehicles.
The attacker is described as a 25 to 35-year-old black man with close cropped hair, police said. He is 6-feet-1 to 6-feet-3 and weighs 180 to 200 pounds.
He was last seen wearing a dark, long-sleeved T-shirt and jeans, police said.
