Raising a special needs child creates unique challenges, not the least of which can be financial. Clint McCoy came up with an interesting way to bring in some money to help his son, Colby. He wrote a children's book. It's called The Book Crook, and it's Colby's favorite book.
In some ways, Colby is like every other 7-year-old. He loves to swing, run and play with trucks and trains. But Colby also has autism.
"He was about 2 1/2 when he started to change. We knew we had something on our hands," said Clint McCoy.
Colby's been in and out of different schools. His parents would like to send him to a private school that caters specifically to autistic children. But right now that's financially out of the question.
"It's really expensive. You look at the price and you're wasting your time to go look at it. There's no way," said Colby's father Clint.
The Coweta County father came up with an idea to raise extra cash by writing a book for children. The first couple of words, "look, see," were actually penned by Colby himself.
"He used to say that all the time, and I was cleaning out some bushes at my grandmother's house and thought I can probably write something to that," said Clint.
With money tight, Clint wrote, illustrated and published the book. Last month, the book was picked up by Amazon.
"It's about a sneaky little fox that steals an overweight rabbit, Mare Hare's cook book. Him and his friends have to find a way to get it back," said Clint.
The book, which teaches children about the dangers of stealing, has been a labor of love for 3 1/2 years. Clint hopes it will now pay off to make Colby's life better.
"Hopefully I can sell some books and we can get him in a school that can help him," said Clint.
