DuPage County reports first human West Nile case this year

Posted: Updated:
WHEATON, Ill. (Associated Press) -

The DuPage County Health Department says it has confirmed the first local human case of West Nile virus in 2012.

The department said Tuesday the woman who tested positive for the mosquito-borne virus is in her 50s and lives in Downers Grove in the Chicago suburbs. The department didn't provide information about her condition or identity.

The Illinois Department of Public Health said last week that human cases of the virus are showing up earlier this year than in most years because of hot, dry weather. At least seven people have tested positive for the virus statewide. Last year the first human case in the state wasn't reported until Aug. 19.

Most people with West Nile won't get sick, but about one in five will develop flu-like symptoms.
