CHRIS CONTE #47 Safety
6'2", 203 lbs.
2nd season / California
Bio - As a rookie, Conte started in nine of the 14 games he played until being put on injured reserve due to an ankle injury. In those 14 games Conte tallied 47 tackles, 23 three of them unassisted. He also recorded his first interception against in London against Tampa Bay. Switched position from corner to safety in college. His senior year he collected 157 tackles (100 solo) and was named to the All-Pac 10 first team.
Lou's Call –His teammates really like the way he plays. When he was drafted, Jerry Angelo projected him as a player who had great range and should pick up the scheme quickly, which he did. The safety has always been a problem position for Lovie Smith with starting safeties changing 56 times under Lovie since 2004. If Conte can stay healthy, Lovie may have himself his own "Gary Fencik" managing the secondary.
Tom's Take – I like what I saw from Conte in his rookie year. There were some mistakes, but overall he wasn't overwhelmed by the jump to the NFL. A former CB in college, he has good ball still and has the potential to solidify a position that has seen a lot of turnover.
