First Lady's salary debate, NBC's Olympic video 'Bodies in Motion': Chat Room

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
On this week's Chat Room, consultant Rochelle Trotter and political commentator Laura Schwartz discuss the President's bid to get Michelle a salary, and NBC's firestorm around its "Bodies in Motion" video.
President Obama seems to think that his wife, First Lady Michelle Obama deserves a salary for her work as First Lady. He used the angle that "women should get paid equally for their work, and Michelle doesn't." Is this a reasonable request?
Rochelle thinks it is insane. Michelle is not an elected official, and her role is really one of support for her husband's agenda which takes on many "social" forms. Furthermore, she has a staff of over 20, which earned over $1.5million in 2010.
Why should taxpayers pay her for her role as wife of the president? Perhaps she should be paid the minimum wage - or the salary of the Social Secretary of the White House, and be forced to let go her 20 employees. Would President Obama like that?
Laura agreed that the statement was not sound. She mentioned that when the president made this statement he was in Colorado (where he really needs the female vote) and perhaps it was just a slip. She went on to state the disparities which exist between pay for males versus females - especially African American and Latino females. So his plea simply did not make sense.
Next up NBC is under fire for a video it posted called "Bodies in Motion" which depicted some of the world's most elite female athletes in what many say is a soft-porn video. The video included close ups of various female body parts and female athletes undressing in slow motion. It has been removed given the backlash, but now NBC is accused of female exploitation.
Laura thinks the video was definitely soft porn and very distasteful. Rochelle agreed, stating that maybe they did this as a ratings ploy since they struggle to retain their #3 spot in top television networks.
Either way NBC now stands for "Nothing But Cheeks" - and not those found on the human face!
