Dionne Miller's Bears Bourbonnais Blog - August 8

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. (FOX 32 News) -

It's the eve of the Bears season. Well, the pre-season. It's also the birthday of Jay Cutler's first child - a boy - Camden Jack. Let the storybook season begin, right?

Ok, I know Thursday against the Bronco's won't count, but it's football - a real NFL game. Time to give this team a real dress rehearsal. Let's see them hit someone in a different uniform. How about putting some pressure on a four-time MVP? Did you forget, Peyton Manning? A circus is expected as Manning takes the field for the first time since a one-point play-off loss to the Jets in January of last year. That's a long time, even with his bloodlines.

And the Bears will not have Urlacher for this first run through. I know that's the big storyline. What's going on with 54? But I'm not concerned, because it's the pre-season and he probably would only play a series or two. And because he's Brian Urlacher, he knows this defense better than anyone. He knows his body better than we do. If his knee is sore, I believe him and trust when it isn't, he'll play the way he always does. And have we ever known him not to be direct? He'll say something when it's time. Plus, if there is a deeper personal issue happening, let him deal with it. He deserves that.

His absence will allow the team to examine their depth, which needs some real legit evaluation. It's not a secret this defense is criticized for one thing - age. So the more experience some of those young guys can get against a real QB, the better things will go – whether that's now or in the future.

As far as the offense. Kind of a story-book opportunity there too. Cutler, Brandon Marshall and QB Coach Jeremy Bates last worked together on a game plan when they were all in Denver. I believe, despite it being an exhibition game - those three want to show early what they can do. At least that's what I'm looking for and counting on. Unless Cutler is excused to enjoy his first moment's of fatherhood. No doubt that is easily the highlight of his season and his whole life. Whether 2012 leads to a Super Bowl win, or not.

NOTES: No media availability in Bourbonnais Wednesday which is why Cutler's status for Thursday night was not officially touched on. In a classy move, the team re-signed DE Alex Brown so he can officially retire a Bear on Thursday. Love that. The team did waive TE Draylen Thomas. He was a part of the practice squad for the last nine weeks of the 2011 season.

FYE: Thursday's game can be seen only on FOX Chicago. Lou Canellis will be live from the field and hold down sideline reporting duties during the game. Yours truly will be in studio hosting the pre and post game shows joined by Tom Waddle among others. Fun starts at 7 p.m. Don't miss it!
