Rip current warnings for Lake Michigan

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
Swimmers take note -- forecasters are predicting an increased risk of rip currents along the Lake Michigan coasts of Illinois and northwest Indiana through Saturday.

The advisory is in effect from Thursday night though Saturday night for Lake and Cook counties in Illinois and Lake and Porter counties in Indiana, according to the National Weather Service.

Rip currents happen most often at low spots or breaks in sand bars, and near structures like jetties and piers. The powerful, fast-moving channels of water can sweep swimmers away from shore.

Forecasters are urging beach-goers to pay special attention to lifeguards and posted signals this weekend.

Thursday will bring a high in the upper 70s with a 60 percent chance of precipitation before dropping to a low in the lower 60s, according to the weather service. Friday will also see a chance of rain showers.
