CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A man suspected in a Hammond, Ind., bank robbery Wednesday tried to rob a nearby Munster bank minutes before, but was thwarted when a quick-thinking teller told him the bank wasn't open, authorities said.
The man passed a note to a TCF Bank branch teller implying he had a gun and demanding money about 11:30 a.m., but walked away empty-handed when she told him the bank wasn't open yet, and that there was no money in the drawers, a release from Munster police said.
TCF's website, however, indicates that bank branch at 716 Ridge Rd. opens at 9 a.m. Wednesday mornings.
Authorities think the same man robbed a Fifth Third Bank branch in Hammond, Ind., 20 minutes later, according to the release. Hammond police had no immediate information about that robbery.
The suspect is described as a white male, about 5-foot-10 and 200 pounds with short black hair, the release said. He was wearing blue jeans, a blue and white checkered shirt and sunglasses.
He fled before police arrived and may be driving a silver Mitsubishi Diamante, the release said.
