CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A South Side man was sentenced to 14 years in prison Monday for his role in a New Year's Eve shooting that left two people dead and five others wounded at a party at a South Side motorcycle club.
Charles Ervin, 29, pleaded guilty Monday to one count of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and Cook County Judge Marry Ellen Coghlan sentenced him to 14 years in prison, Cook County State's Attorney's office spokesman Andy Conklin said Wednesday.
Ervin, of the 8200 block of South Wolcott Avenue, had been charged with two counts of murder, five counts of aggravated battery with a firearm and one count of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. He allegedly opened fire after an earlier dispute with Hawks Motorcycle Club members during a December 2010 New Year's Eve party at their clubhouse in the 100 block of West 75th Street, authorities said.
Emmitt Suddoth, 38, who was nicknamed "World" and was the club's president, died of a single gunshot wound to the back, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. Bryant Glass, 39, was shot multiple times in the chest as the party ended in a hail of gunfire around 1:40 a.m. Jan. 1, 2011.
The motorcycle club had been ordered by the city to stop serving alcohol two years before the shooting, officials said. But though the club had no liquor license and apparently flouted the 2008 cease and desist order, city officials took no further action, Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection spokeswoman Efrat Stein said at the time.
Ervin was sentenced to a year in prison in July 2007 for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, according to the Illinois Department of Corrections.
