CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
A woman was bound and sexually assaulted inside her own home Sunday morning in the West Side Garfield Park neighborhood.
The attack happened on the 2700 block of West Adams at around 7:30 a.m. A masked man reportedly bound her arms and legs, sexually assaulted her, stole her engagement ring and ran away.
Police responding to a 911 call found a 34-year-old woman inside her home sobbing, with the front door still partially open.
She told police she awoke to find a strange man standing in her bedroom, armed with a kitchen knife.
"Using a knife, he bound her feet and her legs before sexually assaulting her. She struggled," police sergeant Michael Bazarek said. "Ultimately, he removed jewelry from her home and fled through a rear door."
Since he wore a cloth over his face and gloves on his hands, the woman could only describe her attacker as an African-American man between 16 and 20 years of age.
She was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital for treatment and is in fair condition.
Neighbors said that type of assault is unusual in the area.
"The neighborhood is up and down, it's back and coming," neighbor Juanita Bradshaw said. "But we never had a problem like we had the other morning. We never had nothing like that."
Police said there was no evidence of forced entry. They believe the man have been casing the neighborhood.
Police said at some point he must have been sitting in someone's gangway, in someone's backyard, or someone's alley. They advised neighbors to immediately report any suspicious activity.
They also said it's unlikely they'll be able to develop a sketch of the suspect because of his disguise.
No one is in custody, but Area North detectives continue the investigation.
