CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
An elderly woman died Tuesday, after she was struck by a Megabus near Union Station.
The 76-year-old woman was attempting to cross the 100 block of South Canal Street when the Megabus struck her at 2:17 p.m., according to Fire Media Affairs.
Megabus spokeswoman Amanda Byers said the bus was making a left turn from Canal Street to Adams Street when it struck the woman.
The driver told investigators she didn't see anyone in the crosswalk. Investigators said the woman may have been struck by the mirror on the bus.
Paramedics took the woman in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital with a head injury, and she died a few hours later.
There were no passengers on the bus at the time of the crash and all arrivals and departures will continue to operate as scheduled, Byers said.
Megabus is working closely with police to investigate the incident. The company will issue an additional statement once facts have been confirmed.
The CTA has temporarily rerouted several bus lines around the scene, including the westbound No. 1 Indiana-Hyde Park, No. 7 Harrison, No. 11 Lincoln/Sedgwick, No. X28 Stony Island Express, No. 126 Jackson, and No. 156 LaSalle, all rerouted via Franklin, Madison and Clinton. Westbound No. 151 Sheridan buses are rerouted via Adams, Wacker, Madison, Clinton, Jackson and Canal.
Last Thursday, a passenger was killed when a MegaBus blew a tire and crashed into a bridge downstate.
