Georgia voters overwhelmingly say they want restrictions on the gifts that lobbyists can give state lawmakers.
But it remains to be seen whether that popular support goads state lawmakers into enacting a cap when the General Assembly reconvenes next year.
Results from Tuesday's primary election show about 81 percent of voters in the Republican and Democratic primary elections expressed support for setting lobbyist limits. They were asked in nonbinding ballot questions that function essentially like a survey. Lobbyists can currently give lawmakers as much as they want so long as they report it.
Sen. Joshua McKoon, a Republican from Columbus, says he will reintroduce legislation next year calling for a cap. To build support, McKoon says he plans to send lawmakers a letter detailing how many people in their districts voted for limits.
