Are American flags still standing on the moon?

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

When you gaze at the moon, many features like mountains and craters are visible, but what about the American flags planted by NASA astronauts during the Apollo landings in the 1960s?

Are they still there and intact after years of exposure to 500 degree temperature swings and intense ultraviolet light? NASA says yes.

In recent moon photos like the one below scientists were able to locate all six flags by identifying the shadows they cast at different times of day.

NASA.gov and Space.com contributed to this report.
