Police made a second arrest in the hit-and-run accident that injured an 8-year-old boy in Cedartown. Authorities say the men were racing when a vehicle struck Elijah Diamond as he rode his bike along Jefferson Street on Sunday night.
Authorities said that Darius Jamal Strong fled the scene and abandoned his car a few blocks from the scene. He turned himself in on Monday morning.
After being tipped off that another car may have been involved, Cedartown police interviewed witnesses, who led them to 26-year-old Almasi Lyles.
Police say Lyles and Strong were drag racing down Jefferson Street. Strong reportedly lost control of his vehicle veered off the road, hitting the child. Both drivers kept going.
Lyles was arrested at 9 p.m. on Monday, according to Cedartown Assistant Police Chief James Newsome.
"Mr. Lyles and Mr. Strong are both in the county jail with the additional charges of drag racing on the roadway being placed on both of them," Newsome said.
Both men face several charges including serious injury by vehicle, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident and racing on the roadway.
Diamond suffered a broken leg but is expected to make a recovery. Monica Alford, a relative of the family, visited with them on Tuesday.
"I talked to them, asked them how the little boy is doing and they said he is doing fine," said Alford.
Doctors released Elijah from the hospital on Tuesday.
