CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

We're in for a double dose of full moons this August.

One takes place on August 1 and the other on August 31. When a second full moon occurs in a single month it is known as a "blue moon." On average we see a blue moon every 2.66 years and in some rare years there have been two blue moons.

Why the name blue moon? Because light streaming through clouds gives a bluish hue to the moon. Moisture and particulates like dust or ash can also cast a blue, green, yellow or red color across the moon.

Above is a photo of the last blue moon on New Year's Eve 2009.
